Farm biosecurity is a complex challenge for all Queenslanders.
Under the Biosecurity Act 2014, everyone has an obligation to take all reasonable and practical measures to prevent or minimise biosecurity risks. This includes resource companies.
The GasFields Commission Queensland has joined forces with Animal Health Australia and Plant Health Australia to tackle biosecurity challenges associated with major infrastructure development in the gas fields.
The team has developed a range of education and information resources that landholders, resource companies, contractors and ordinary visitors can use every day to help clarify biosecurity risks and offer solutions.
It’s important that everyone understands how activities such as seismic surveying, mustering, the drilling of gas wells, cultivating a paddock, surveying and pegging a gas field and fencing off infrastructure all interact and the unique set of biosecurity challenges each creates.
It's a complex subject.
With all that in mind, we have recently rolled out a series of workshops around the Surat Basin to help landholders develop a property map and biosecurity management plan.
Our next move is to continue with these landholder workshops while also delivering information to resource company land access officers and contractors to assist their understanding of complex farm biosecurity challenges.
Biosecurity is not a new subject but it is increasingly becoming a whole of community responsibility where the spread of unwanted pests and diseases is being minimised by working together.
